how to connect HP4194A to a printer

I could find it in the manual explaining how to connect HP4194A to a
printer. What kind of printers can i connect. Am i suppose to use 8bit
I/O port?

i have checked in agilent and i have used the HP printer ( HP 930C)
listed in the supported. How to set the HP 4194A to print with the
printer connected?Could not find in the manual of HP4194A.

I think you set the printer to "listen always" and then hit a "print"
button on the 4194A and away it goes. The secret is setting the
printer to "listen always".

Forgot to mention. The above information is for HP printers with HPIB
interface. I think the 930C is a newer unit and doesn't have HPIB
(IEEE-488).

The 930 is either Centronics or USB. HP defaulted to the HPIB/GPIB
interface. There is a sub menu on most newer HP equipment to select the
output interface, but its been over five years since I've had anything
in front of me that had this feature. Play with all the menus, but
don't change anything you don't need to. Either that, or find one of
the old HP printers with the proper interface. I think it was a tiny
printer called a "Thinkjet".

Good advice on finding an older plotter or the "thinkjet" /
"paintjet". The only problem is getting pens / cartridges as HP
obsoleted them. Finding a working plotter / printer from the mid
1980's time frame will be difficult too.

Another option is buy a Centronics to IEEE488 convertor from Black Box
Corp. The convertor would go between the 4194's IEEE bus and the
printers input cable.

Original poster should find out what interface his 960C uses and
contact Black Box Corp with his problem. All this information is close
to 10 years old. I don't know if Black Box makes these devices
anymore.

I used one of their devices to convert IEEE488 bus to RS-232. I was
programming some instruments years ago (HP Basic) and it was easier to
do it that way (versus using the PC's serial port and the IEEE488).

Read the manual and FAQ for information on other programs you can use to
transfer the plotter information to your PC and plot it on a Windows
supported printer.

See footnote 2 for the GPIB to Parallel converter that is available from
Microprint.

Since most currently available printers have USB only, you may be better off
in the long run with some of the software programs available. Google
7470.exe as a starting place. There is also a program called Plottergeist
that you may want to check out.

I'm to the point of trying to figure out who you have to blackmail at
the VA to get abscessed teeth out. I am gathering up the old camping

I don't know if any of the Commodore 4023 GPIB printers I have still
work, but there are about a dozen in storage.

Thanks a lot for the replies and help. I understand now that i goto
buy some HPIB to parallel converter to interface the printer. Since
the HP4194A is already obsolete and i got pretty old one still
working, i do not want to spend another thousand dollars buying the
converter. I would like to use the I/O 8bit port available at the back
of 4194A to interface with printer. Do you think its possible. the
manual just mentions that this I/O can be used to interface the
peripherals. If anyone has done this before, it would be wonderful if
you can let me know how. Thanks to all.

The Black Box converters were about $200 (US). I don't think the I/O
port will plot / print the screen. I calibrate the 4194's at my job,
they are very reliable.

I do not see any option in my printer HP 930C to set it into listen
mode. Initially i was using 4194A with a HP plotter 7550. It used to
work fine till it was borrowed by my student. Now when i on my plotter
it gives message "no optional memory loaded". I could not figure out
the problem so thought of phasing out the older plotter and use the
printer HP 930C. I can see from hp website the 4194A can be interfaced
with the HP 930C. (http://www.home.agilent.com/upload/cmc_upload/All/
Supported_Printer.pdf)
Still not able to fix it.
I am connecting it printer to the I/O port of the 4194A. How can i
reconfigure 4194A to dump the screen shot to the printer via i/o port.
The manual seems almost redutant for users like me. I could not find
any useful information in it.
