How Synopsys could save $$ without offshoring

I'm not cringing or whining one bit. The US made their bed and now will lay
in it. It is too expensive and their are too many alternatives to doing
engineering in the US. Why should companies cower to people who can't face
facts? If I can hire an Indian or Asian engineer who has a 3.9 GPA, willing
to work hard for $20,000 bucks/year than why not? These flag-waving idiots
crying about lost jobs sure as hell want a good deal when they go shopping -
and the only reason they would get a good deal is because some business man
got one too.

Competition is good.

who partied every week-end and got an MBA be your boss??? I thought we were
working
harder than pre-med students in my school. Every night of the week was a
marathon of
Calculus, physics, statics, dynamics, programming languages and later
electro-magnetics
(remember how "fun" that was?), materials and passive and active circuit
theory.

In a pop culture that celebrates losers and degenerates this isn't going to
be very
appealing.

I've been out of work for a year now. I started back for my Ph.D last year
after I was laid off
and found that an EE Ph.D. is a waste of time and actually hurts your
marketability. The word
"over-qualified" is now a favorite among employers which means "drop your
price", you'll hear this one a lot
with a ph.d. - they've also wised up to the fact that people with advanced
degrees are not necessarily
going to fill the bill better for lesser jobs. If you feel bad now with a
BSEE or MSEE, try to find a Ph.D. EE job
(Hint: you need an 800 GRE score, no attachment to where you presently live,
good connections
and lots of luck).

I got my MSEE at Rensselaer Polytech - great school, the professors were
some of the most awarded and acknowledged people in their fields. Also many
of them hadn't
worked for private industry in years. Sure, they worked under grants and
many worked at
IBM or Bell Labs (their only private sector job) for 15 years before getting
into academia.
But none of them could ever answer the question "How do I design, build and
test something with
almost no resources?" or "How do I judge reasonable cost and resource
targets?"

Equally unimpressed with higher education are recruiters and personnel
people. Many
programmers I have met have little or no college background. Indeed many are
the
product of Microsoft training courses and making lots of $$$ with no
calculus or
physics course. Don't be to alarmed with the "MSEE Preferred" garbage, if
anything
it usually means the recruiter doesn't know what they are talking about with
regards to
the position. The same is to be said about EIT or PE - what a scam that is.

At this point I agree. I've been at a string of unstable companies with
little
to offer but a pay-check. Many run by people obsessed with money and view of
employees as little better than day-laborers. It's not unique - I've been in
the
industry since 1983, I couldn't count the number of people who have "Gotten
out of engineering" or had career changes...

The less engineers in the market the better. The stupid, self-serving job
projections
made in the late 80's were probably based on having 100 resumes for every
job.
Industry drove this and the schools jumped right on board.

If your a kid reading this - change your major if you can. There are guys
with 10+ years
experience looking for work and the economics of doing business in the US
are driving many
opportunities over-seas. Engineering is fast becoming a commodity job. If
you really love
engineering and don't want to change majors, get a passport and learn Hindi.

directly, because the lead time for these things to take effect
is so long; but if we don't take these steps as a collection
of individuals, our collective future looks grim.

Although I take your point, I would like to see the investment
even earlier in the chain - young people, education. Nevertheless,
even 5% of your $87bn would go quite a long way towards
medium-term regeneration.

Depressingly, quite a lot of people voted for the present
US government, and even now quite a lot of people support its
policies. We've had our fair share of democratically elected
governments doing crazy things in the UK, too.

nation that has most vigorously embraced free-market
economics when it suited them. Those of us who feel
uncomfortable with the unfettered free market can sit
back smugly and say "I told you so", whilst goggling
open-mouthed at the protectionism that is sometimes
applied by supposedly free-market economies throughout
the developed world.

The developing world can offer us (and by "us" here I mean
the whole world's economy, not just the West) a well-trained,
highly motivated workforce that can mobilise very large
numbers of employees at comparatively low cost. Those costs

Indeed. But certainly you can excuse a lot of unemployed US engineers
for being angry about all of this, can't you? On one hand it's great
that people are getting jobs in India, but on the other hand it sucks
for a lot of Americans are losing theirs and it will only serve to
further erode the middle-class in the US. At this point, I'm
beginning to become resigned to this outcome: we just won't be having
as many good-paying, engineering (and other white collar ) jobs in the
US. We need to figure out how to live on less and how to make the
transition to a lower standard of living. This might be something
that takes 20 years to correct so in the meantime we better get used
to getting by on a lot less.

The question now is, what can governments in the West do to soften the
effects of such a large exodus of good paying jobs? The problem is
that in the US at least, this issue isn't even on the politician's
radar screen yet, and I
suspect that by the time it is it could be too late for a lot of
people.

say jobs only for those born on and brought up in silicon valley ,
the other US people are outsiders. No jobs to people from Texas and Virginia,
cause we dont have enough jobs in California?????

Mixed thoughts here...

Its not true that asians always the best. They are cheap labour and
they can settle down for anything better than their current living
standard. If US faces the nightmare of jobs moving offshore, for
countries like India where layoff was unheard of in history is now a
reality. Many asians are used to exploitation but not used to be
insecure. In US, we have unemployment benefit, social security etc.
and what can we expect from third world countries when it comes to
laws against capitalist giant companies. Hitech engineers become "Use
and throw" commodity.

For example, Companies like Wipro in India still do not share its
profits with employees and their major business is "bodyshopping". Its
chairman holds 85% stocks and yet they are listed on NASDAQ. It is
true this company does layoff when company does not do good to
preserve its profits.

On the other hand, think of H1 workers at US... When US throws them
out after 6 years what do you expect them to do ? Think of people who
never get their green cards and slave themselves for the "carrot".

How about for a change, US workers apply for a green card for
China/India and work for their US companies there and compete with
local talents... Does not sound lucrative ? Eh... We need some
introspection here when we say "All men are equal"...

I have been reading all the messages and I would like to add my 2
paisa (since I live in India) worth to this discussion.

I am an Engineer from one of the premier institutes of India and
worked for 4.5 yrs in the valley before returning to India in 5 years
back. At that time I saw a lot of concenrs that the local companies
were hiring "foreigners" and local people are losing jobs. The fact is
that USA doesn't produce so many engineers so they have to depend upon
some other country. You can not expect highschool dropouts to do the
job for which I was hired. It is a fact that even after 2 years of my
return my old company used to call me and request me to work for them
as a consultant (with the same hourly rate as anyone would get in the
first world!). I used to think that all first world people are good
and think logically, but some of the discussions here really make me
sad.

Employers always cite high salaries/costs (i.e. man-hour rates) as
justification for laying off or
outsourcing work. Who sets the standards as to what an ASIC/FPGA designer
is really worth. Currently it is market forces. Supply and demand. There
seems to be
others that aren't so subject to these forces. e.g my anecdotal evidence is
that
non-technical consultants still do well and what about the hugh (read
obscene) salaries
paid to many CEO's. Often I see articles here about CEO bonuses paid despite
the
fact that the company performed badly.

Our problem is that the relationship between our work/inventiveness and
company profits
is not easily measurable e.g. compared to say a salesman. When corporate
outcomes
are due to the sum of all employees, how can executives justify their
salaries. I have seen
companies succeed despite their bad management. Unfortunately the discussion
will come
back to market forces ....... What about outsourcing CEO functions to India?
Now
that would save some money! Sorry .... excuse my poor attempt at humour.

I have to admit a lot of ignorance and apathy when it comes to the market
and corporate ways but this whole discussion only has merit if we look at
ways to turn
this around. This is a problem amongst engineers where we don't look after
ourselves enough. Many industries are highly protected. e.g. in Australia
they regulate
the number of doctors by controlling the number that enter University
courses each year.
Not that I advocate this for our profession. Other industries are highly
unionised.

What can we do? Particularly since engineers in all countries want to work.
Since I don't live
in the US I don't want to see protectionism as a suggested solution. Are we
putting
enough pressure on organizations like the IEEE to look at the issue or lobby
politicians to ensure that they are aware of our problems.

companies are sending jobs offshore now.

It goes without saying that Silicon Valley is expensive. It's an
expensive place to live and an expensive place to do business.
Because it's an expensive place to live, companies have to pay more to
their employees there so they can afford to live there.

The simplistic answer we're getting from the corporations these days
is "We've got to offshore jobs to save money so we can compete because
everyone is doing it.". Of course the premise of this argument is
debatable in itself: are they saving money on salaries and losing in
productivity or do they simply think they're going to make it up in
volume (of employees). But even if the overseas engineers are not as
experienced as their US counterparts, they soon will be - might take a
few years, but they will be. So we're not only going to see jobs and
money leave the US (salaries not paid here means no taxes for
Fed/State/local governments paid by employees - this is the main
reason most states are coming up short on revenue not because tax
rates are too low, but I digress.) but also knowledge and experience.
US engineers will not be able to keep up their skillsets on their own
and soon they'll lag behind.

Given that the major EDA companies are very much engineering companies
and are based in the US we might hope that they would have some
loyalty to the US. So how about other ideas for saving money? As was
noted above, Silicon Valley is expensive. Apparently Synopsys has a
rather large empty office building on their Oregon campus. Why not
move most of their engineering up to Oregon? The expense for office
space would seem to be much lower there and over a period of a few
years salaries could be allowed to match the lower salaries of that
area. I even hear you can get a very decent house up there for around
$200K. I'm sure that one of the arguments would be that employees may
not want to move, but given the increase in standard of living for the
dollar I suspect many would be very eager to relocate. And of course,
it beats the alternative of having your job sent over to India.
Believe me, being unemployed in the Valley quickly drains all your
savings.

It is natural for people to want something for nothing. It is natural to
steal (it is viewed as sharing in a communal society). It is natural for
politicians to be corrupt (those that aren't, aren't in power anyway). It
is natural for monopolies to form and black economies to flourish. It is
natural for nations to invade only others that have oil. It is natural for
there to be traders and consumers of cocain.
The role of a government is to be non-corrupt and suppress a few of those
natural tendancies, as well as keeping the population employed by promoting
exports of products (not jobs). If your government is exporting jobs, it is
stupid and corrupt.

OK, consider the problem of the poor bastard who bought his house in
Silicon Valley at the height of the boom. Sure, you can buy a house
for $200K in Oregon ($200K buys a real nice place in Tucson, too), but
that doesn't help when you can't unload your shack in Si Valley
because you have a $500K note on a property worth much less, 'cause
nobody's buyin' 'cause the jobs are leaving.

Maybe Synopsis should get into the real-estate biz, and buy up, at a
profit for the employee, the homes of the employees who move?

Like that'll happen.

Here's the deal - I can get an overseas resource for 1/2 what I pay here
plus the management agravation. I can sell cheaper as a result. You can
protect your job anyway you want, I'll get around that. In the end I get a
cheaper resource, you lose your job. Ask manufacturing, textile, steel
people about all this. If you want to put your faith in some politician
fixing this, go right ahead.

Wages will go up overseas, after a while and talent will become short. But
thats not happening now. If you want to protect your job, work competitively
with the rest of the world.
