I guess it's not fair to hold Trump responsible for much of the results of the COVID-19 infection raging through the US. In the grand scheme of things he has only a small role to play in the outcome. He could have done some things he didn't, and the things he did, most of them he could have done much sooner. But how much would it have mattered?
The biggest problem in the US was in New York and even more specifically in and around New York city. I don't know why, but there was bickering between the mayor of the city and the governor. I had the impression the mayor said he was going to close the schools and the governor said he didn't have the authority, then a a few days later closed the schools. I think that repeated on some other issues. What can the President do about any of that? Not much!
Each state decided when and if to impose a stay at home order. A few never did, many did it far too late. What can the President do about that? Not much.
Even though this was a matter where the federal government only had a few ways to deal with the calamity, the one thing the President could have done was to be the rock of stability leading the way with a consistent message. The federal presence of support to the states and giving clear, unequivocal guidance could have and would have helped tremendously.
But instead, we all watched as Trump seized the daily opportunity to promote Trump with the intention of leading anyone shoved to the background. What was important to him was how many people watch Trump everyday. So instead of letting his experts speak, he did the talking, with his personal spin on everything he said.
So it really doesn't matter what someone else might have done in his place. Trump will be judged for his performance in this crisis. This will be not only the defining point of his presidency, but of his life.
