How far can I run a video cable?

There a bird house on the end of the dock about 100 ft away from the
cottage. I have a teeny-weeny video camera that'll run on 5volts and has a
standard video output, the sort you'd plug it a VCR.

If I run a cable out to the camera mounted inside the bird house will I get
a usable picture?

100ft is no problem, 300ft and you would loose a bit of quality.
But you should use good quality 75 ohm coaxial cable

Three things are certain:
Death, taxes and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

Probably, you would have to use the right impedance coax, (75 Ohm).
Level and high frequencies will drop a bit, but for the birds... probably OK.

That could be a 75 ohm F connector or a baseband RCA jack. The
latter truly gets *plugged into*, but I'm assuming the former is
what the OP has.

Only if you can get an artist or photographer to draw/shoot you
running with cable ;)

Since *you're* definitely talking RF, you really can't make that
kind of generalization. RG-59 (~2 dB/100 ft., ch 3, 68 F), RG-6
(~1.6 dB), RG-11(~1 dB), and up to 1.25(~.25 dB) in hardline all
have different attenuations. Throw in a dB or so for f'd up
connectorization :)

If the OP knows his his output level...
