Charting the Future of the Volvo Ocean Race

The Volvo Ocean Race has appointed The Boston Consulting Group (BCG)
to assist in creating a strategy for promoting the most challenging
round-the-world race as the world's undisputed sailing event.

The Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 will be the tenth running of this ocean
marathon. Starting in Alicante, Spain, on October 4, 2008, with in-
port racing, it will, for the first time in the history of the race,
take in Cochin, India, Singapore, and Qingdao, China, before finishing
in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Spanning some 37,000 nautical miles,
stopping at 11 ports, and taking nine months to complete, the Volvo
Ocean Race is the world's premier yacht race for professional racing
crews.

India, Russia extend military commission tenure till 2020

India and Russia has decided to extend the tenure of an inter-
governmental commission for military cooperation by another 10 years
to 2020 and inched closer to resolving Gorshkov aircraft carrier price
and T-90 tanks technology transfer issues.

30 Squash Players to be provided training for Commonwealth Games

The Sports Ministry has decided to provide state of art training and
exposure both at domestic and international levels to 30 Squash
players for preparing them for the world class performance. Under the
Scheme for “Preparation of Indian Teams for Commonwealth Games, 2010,
the Steering Committee has approved the names of 26 Squash players so
far, for their inclusion in the “Core Group” of sportspersons . In
addition, four Indian and one Foreign Coaches have also been
identified in consultations with Squash Rackets Federation of India
(SRFI).

India Post to disburse micro-credit in 8 states and the North-East

India Post is now poised to disburse micro-credit to Women Self Help
Groups in 8 states and the NorthEast in a tie-up with NABARD. The
states are Bihar, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh,
Maharashtra, Orissa and Uttar Pradesh. The scheme was so far
operational in five districts in Tamil Nadu on a pilot basis. Post
Offices in Tamil Nadu have successfully disbursed credit to the tune
of Rs. 1.35 crores to 165 Women SHGs. No default has been noticed in
the repayment.

SJVN The first hydro electric company to get world bank funding with
CDM benefits

Union Minister of Power, Shri Sushilkumar Shinde has complimented
Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam, SJVN for being the first Hydro Electric
Company in India to get World Bank Funding for a large Hydroelectric
Project, the Rampur HEP (412 MW) in Himachal Pradesh tied with Clean
Development Mechanism (CDM) benefits. During the review meeting held
here, the Minister advised SJVN to tie up more hydro electric Projects
with concessional funding and noted with satisfaction that it was
emerging as a major regional player in hydro power through its
internal accruals having bagged the Arun-3 hydroelectric project (402
MW) through competitive bidding in Nepal. It was also updating/
preparing Detailed Project Reports for two Hydro Electric Projects in
Bhutan namely 900 MW Wangchu HE Project and 486 MW Kholangchu HE
Project.
