Hitachi video VT-M631EUK end of tape problem

I have a hitachi vcr model No.VT-M631EUK that has an end of tape
sensing problem. When I rewind a tape the video appears not to see the
leader tape and does not slow down and therefore ends up winding the
tape too tight. I know a little about videos so assumed it would be a
duff bulb in the end of tape sensor cct. but this vcr has a
led/phototransistor setup. Has any body had the same problem and
managed to solve it? All help appreciated.

TIA

The problem you described above is very common on some hitachi vcr's,
i dont know if the modell you have is one of those though.
But i have had severall hitachi vcr's where the soldering to the sensors was
the problem.

I had a Sony the other day where the LED , the prisms, and phototransistors
were all covered with smoke/nicotine residue, sufficient to cause exactly
the symptom you mentioned.
