Hitachi VCR won't playback tapes anymore

I am asking for any help out there?

I have a Hitachi FX950E (NTSC Playback) VCR and it has started playing
up, I have read through the fix suggestions on the website but nothing
has worked yet. The problem is this :- I insert a recordable cassette
(which normally plays back OK) into the machine and it goes straight
to REW and attempts to rewind the tape 3 or 4 times slowly (start,
stop, start, stop etc.) then stops and pops the tape out and shuts
down. During this period of time the cassette is in the machine I can
switch it to standby and it carries on rewinding slowly!! I realise
that these things are nearly dinosaurs now but if anyone might have an
idea for me to fix it I would appreciate it.

Thanks

If this unit is from the early to mid 1980's, probably faulty tape end
sensors. As I remember, they are soldered into pc boards on the front
loading mechanism.

Good luck.

And this is after the standard "unplug it for 5 minutes" procedure?

Yes, I had it disconnected for ages while seeking help but didn't work
either. Thanks for the response though.

Most likely defective sensors, or sensor circuits, or mechanical
problems, or the power supply is not able to supply the proper output
any longer.

An experienced tech who is used to working on VCR machines could go
through your VCR machine and make you an estimate for servicing it.
This type of repair may not be low in cost.

open it up, check no cassette labels etc are floating around. Try
unclipping/removing the front panel, one of the push switches rewind
probably) may be jammed I had a thomson VCR do this a couple of years
ago, the plastic got deformed.

a squirt of swirth cleaner in the mode switch may also solve this.
