Hitachi D-980 Cassette Deck

I recently acquired a Hitachi D-980 Cassette Deck that needs new
belts... one belt is flabby and stretched out of shape, the other had
turned to gooey fragments. I suppose I could take some measurements
and estimate the size for replacements, but possibly does anyone know
the correct sizes for this machine?

TIA...

Hawkeye:
You should take the old belts along with the MODEL NUMBER of your Hitachi to
any local repair shop that regularly services tape decks and VCRs...... they
will be able to identify the proper replacement sizes and might be able to
utilize a cross reference book listing the Hitachi model number and most
active shops will have the belts you need, in stock.... or they should be
able to order them for you.

Not a terribly helpful answer (seeing how the nearest "local" shop has
to be more than 100 miles away) but thank you anyway for the reply.

Hawkeye:
Sorry you didn't like a perfectly good answer...... for simple things like
belts, many times they will be available and in stock at most repair shops.
OK then..... order some belts from a catalog house or on the internet and
pay shipping and minimum order charges...... and wait for it to be shipped.
Use your search engine and punch in "tape deck replacement belts" .... lots
of useful hits.
A good source I have used is http://www.iglou.com/studiosound/

I got a tape deck (teac cx 310)with a bad belt on the drive mech. could
not find one anywhere.I was repairing my granddaughters 4 bike with flat
tires and look at all those bad tubes had an ideal to cut them across to
make belts.with a 14" 16" 20" and 24" I took a 20" and it was a perfect
match.(3 trys to get one straight.you'll have stretch them on the pullys and
they shrink in width as such.working for over a year now!!!
hope this helps
stan
P.S. new tube I'v seen are uni fit types, these where old ones for that size!
