We bought this 36"tv new 3 years ago. it was then rated #1 in consumer
reports.
the picture just went out, except for a thin red, horizontal line
running across the center of the screen. the picture had gone out 2
times before (warning sign) in the past month and both times it came
right back on after pressing the remote's on/off. is anyone familiar
with this set and anything about this sort of thing. how much to fix?
it had surge protection. any info on this thing would be great.

This is not usually an expensive repair unless you waited too long after the
warning signs...... the symptoms your reported are usually caused by faulty
or cracked solder connections near and around the vertical deflection
circuitry and/or faulty high ESR electrolytics. If you waited too long,
there can be other failed components and the repair will be a little more
involved..... Next time HEED the warning signs more quickly.
At the very least you should have a shop tech come to your home to give you
a repair cost estimate so you can make an intelligent repair decision with
facts instead of internet or telephone guesses. You can save quite a bit of
money if you have a couple friends help you to carry it in to a shop for the
estimate and/or repair. Either way, a tech will actually have to pull the
back cover off of the television and make some basic tests to determine what
exactly will be required to fix it...... can't do this over the internet
or on the phone.
