I have the Level 1 and Level 2 (also called Maximum Results) Hip Hop Abs sets and love `em both, so I decided to give the Dance Party Series a try. With the exception of one workout, I'd say Shaun has kept the Hip Hop Abs spirit going strong and stepped up the already high fun-level one more notch! CARDIO GROOVE (40 minutes): I've been doing Hip Hop Abs for well over a year and am used to the Tilt-Tuck-Tighten movement, but the first time I tried Cardio Groove I had my work cut out for me... this workout is MUCH faster than any past HHA routines. Almost all of these moves are new and engage every single part of the body (arms, shoulders, back, abs, buns, thighs - you name it), so by the end of the 40 minutes I was sweating something crazy. To that end, though, Shaun-T is so much fun that he always makes the workouts go quickly, but I was astounded by how Cardio Groove *flew* by, even the first time I tried it and was trying extra hard to keep up. There are four sequences chalked full of fun new moves (Robo, Hammer Slide, Smooth Walk, Rise, Push It, Throw It Out, Smack Dat... haha) along with a few old standbys (Kick It, Party Walk, and a Get Busy "Remix"), and the progressio
n from one move to the next is super quick. If you're familiar with HHA you should catch on pretty fast, but it might be difficult if this is your first time "kickin' it with Shaun-T."There's also a 6-minute CARDIO GROOVE CHALLENGE where you go through every move from the workout twice and then one more time with basically no breathers. If you let the DVD keep playing after the full workout this will come on automatically, and it's a great way to work in a few extra minutes of cardio. You can also select the Challenge from the main DVD menu, so you can mix and match it with other workouts if you want. BOOTY SHAKIN' (35 minutes): I have to admit, Booty Shakin' put me off the first time I tried it because I was completely lost about 80% of the time... the moves in this routine just don't flow into one another very naturally (even Shaun's crew messes them up several times in the video). Whereas in the other HHA routines Shaun is big on keeping the workout balanced (if you do a move on the right then you also do it on the left), Booty Shakin' has a lot of one-sided movements that makes the workout feel uncharacteristically lopsided. I actually did the BOOTY SHAKIN' CHALLENGE
(4 minutes, twice through each move then one more time) a few times after I first tried this workout to get more accustomed to the movements, which helped tremendously the next time I did the full workout. And there *are* some cool moves (Twizzler, Hip Fever, Shaka Laka and Diva Swirl are all new and really fun), but overall I didn't feel the effects of this routine quite as much as the others, probably because the moves are more broken up and it's harder to let loose with them. Still, once you get accustomed to the movements it's fun to do -- it just feels more like a random dance routine than the usual Hip Hop Abs workout.ROCKIN' ABS (30 minutes): Rockin' Abs is a perfectly serviceable workout, though there's not much in the way of new moves here (you get Up Rock, Get Busy, Washing Machine 360, Flava, Hammer, Rock the Horse... if you've done the previous Hip Hop Abs series then you've done most of these moves before, but they'd be fun and easy to learn if you were starting here). Still, I enjoy Rockin' Abs because it provides a good cardio workout with some weight incorporation, and the few new moves are bankable: Capo Slide, which is a slide back and forth with weights ext
ended; Flat Back Ripper, which is similar to other weight lifts but has more intense pulses; and the Drill Press, which is 9 minutes of floor work that involves sets of three push-ups with legs extended to the sides then running your legs with your hands on the floor (if that sounds scary, don't panic: Tania does a more manageable modified version). Overall, a fine enough workout, but not terribly original.HARD BODY (35 minutes): I like this workout a lot -- there are some really cool new moves (Turntable, Fly Drive, Run Bounce, Meeting, Jiggy Scoop, Wobble, Sexy Abs) and some good variations on old moves (Lil' Busy, Freak, Roll Out, Rainbow, Rise Up, Afro Slide, Frat Punch). I also love that you keep your weights in hand the entire time yet you're really dancing; Ab Sculpt and Total Body Burn -- past HHA workouts that incorporate weights -- involve more aerobic and less dance-like moves. The music in Hard Body is also really energetic, and when you add that to the intensity of the moves you are in for one fun sweat-fest. 5-MINUTE AB BLASTER: My poor hips and buns did not know what hit them after 5-Minute Ab Blaster -- whew! This workout consists mainly of leg lifts and pu
lses where you drop your foot but don't let it touch the floor (kind of like the Hammer in Last Minute Abs, but for much longer), so I would not recommend it if you have trouble with balance (I wobbled a little on the first attempt!). Still, once you get the moves down it's another good way to tack on an extra few minutes to your workout and work your abs.In sum, the Dance Party Series is another hit for those who love being part of Shaun-T's "crew." I know I was harsh on Booty Shakin' but it's just because I've come to expect the best from Shaun and that one workout did not quite meet the usual Hip Hop Abs standard for me. However, four out of the five workouts in this series rate good to excellent, and they definitely make the series worth buying!
