High grade of integration with Word needed

Hi,
I am currently developing a module library containing both block
diagrams and loads of text. It is supposed to become both a nice user
manual for the product at end as well as an implemetation guide for the
implementer. Currently I use Visio to draw these block diagrams because
visio objects can be integrated somehow well in Word documents. Problem
is that I will have to draw the block diagrams two times: one time in
visio and then later one time as top level for the schematics that is
supposed to implement the block diagrams. Sometime down the line I will
probably forget to update the visio block diagram when I do a change in
the schematics due to a bug or an extended wish from the customer.

Visio is also a bit "interesting" as a program.

Has anybody experience with a schematic capture program that allow the
user embedd the schematic into word as a link to an external object?

Since you're running under Windows, why not get an inexpensive pdf file
creator and point Word to the resulting file? You can use pdf995 as
"advertising supported" or buy their inexpensive license.

I'm sure it doesn't do anything like as much as the genuine Adobe
Acrobat does but it's very handy. Use your current schematic capture
program and periodically "print" a new pdf file for the documentation
folks.

Alternatively, switch to a Unix-based system, where PDF-creating
software is free and very common.

OpenOffice.org is ported to Windoze and opens/saves PDFs.

Problem is that openoffice is not a qualified office application in my
company.

The tools Visual Elite HDL from Summit and HDL-Designer from Mentor
Graphics fit the product class since they have a windows 2000 version,
and I evaluate how well I can integrate one of them into word. Advantage
is at least an hierarchical export to html so that an online
documentation can be created.

Compared to the well of schematics/PCB packages out there, this market
is not really overcrowded of apps even though a license cost around $20k.
