That's irrelevant, since this ain't a buy and sell newsgroup.

The proper response is "Your ad does not belong here, because this
is not a buy and sell newsgroup".

There isn't a group for test equipment and gear for sale.
As long as the item is absolutely and directly applicable to consumer
electronics repair, electronics components, etc. A SINGLE post is ok, but
be darn sure it fits.
CB stuff does not fit. It is also very important to use proper subject
headings and good information.

A group like this is not usually tolerant of people advertising EBAY
auctions.
If someone has something to sell/give away that is one thing.

Offering electronic equipment for sale here is fine as long as you're an
individual and not a business, posting a link to your ebay auction however
is not, we all know how to go look on ebay when we want something and have
no desire for ebay spam on the newsgroups.

Don't be an idiot.

A "single post is perfectly fine" turns into a constant flow of
ads, that fill the newsgroups. I've seen it happen to newsgroups intended
for discussion, and they get to the point where people post messages
where they are supposed to ask questions, because all the ads make it
look like a buy and sell newsgroup.

People are way too confused by advertising in magazines and on TV.
They assume that since we get used to advertising there, then "a few
little ads" won't bother the newsgroups. But there is a big difference.
In old media, the ads pay for the content. The advertisers pay because
they believe the content will bring people to their ads; while the
viewers/readers tolerate the ads because they realize it pays for
the content.

Ads in newsgroups don't pay for the content. The advertisers are merely
leaching off the content that the rest of us provide at no cost. They
want the readership that the content provides, without the cost of paying
for that readership.

Read up on how things are before you give advertisers permission to
post:
ftp://ftp.eskimo.com/u/m/mzenier/seguide9706.txt
which is Mark Zenier's guide to the sci.electronics.* hierarchy, which
tells of what the different subgroups are intended for, and which one
is intended for ads. Mark had a big hand in the split of sci.electronics
eight years ago.

Also note that these are international newsgroups. Even if I tolerated
ads in discussion newsgroups, virtually all of the ads would be of no
interest to me because they aren't local, or even in the same country.

No, I make no distinction between auctions and forsale ads. They are
both out of place. And anyone who splits along those lines are just
enabling the advertisers.
