Hi,

I am not an electronics graduate but I need help to deisgn a toy for a
child with learning difficulties. Anyone with experience of able to
help with designing a flat pad with 40 keys. If anyone one is
touched, it would say a word. This is all I am looking for.

Budget?
Do you have any software skills?
Some synthesisers may be customisable enough to be able to assign
a seperate sound to each key.

if you have a computer you could set up a program where the child could
push the mouse around on the screen and click it or use a touch screen
which would do the same.

Devices such as this are commercially available for people with
learning difficulties, speech problems, aphasia etc.. Like many such
things, they are fairly expensive, but may qualify for generous
government subsidies.

One approach to designing such a device would be to use ISD (Winbond)
sound recording chips, if that quality is adequate.

I have a grandson who is autistic. He has a box that has multi-pages
of words and sounds. If I see him this evening I'll get the
manufacturer and model names.

There is a charity in the UK called REMAP which makes one technical
equipment for disabled people. You could try contacting them.

Not a real good picture... the granite dining room table turned out
not to be the ideal backdrop, but here it is......
