Hi
I am installing central locking on my (UK ) car - i have to put something
onto the battery (figure that out when i get there) i also have to put the
other part of the same wire onto 'earth' am i right in thinking this is
somewhere like a normal metal rod with no electricity within the car (i.e
the chasis?)

Not ground either, just negative return to the battery. "Ground" term
denotes the same reference as does "Earth". Normally the chassis is the same
potential as the negative side of the battery and is used for the return
flow to the battery. If in doubt you may consider having a trained mechanic
or automotive electrical technician install the device for you. Of course it
may cost a couple quid but may be worth the inveatment. Especially if they
allow you to watch teh installation and explains the functions when he is
completed. Cheers
