New Batteries in the remote?? Sure the battery contacts are not corroded or
broken, batteries inserted properly?? IR detector device will indicate if
the led in the remote control is putting out any kind of signal, your "Night
Vision" device should suffice. May require disassembly of the remote control
to check the solder connections on the pcb or if it may have been cracked or
broken. May want to check with Panasonic to see if replacment device is
available at reasonable cost or see if there is a company there in Australia
that specializes in reconditioning original remotes.

Three most often causes of remote not working (other than dead or reversered
batteries):
1)Loose solder connections around battery lead wires or osc crystal
2)corrosion due to liquid such as cola or beer spilled on unit
3)cracked circuit board from rough handling (dropped)

If your remote just went dead for no apparent reason, then I would suspect
bad batteries or bad battery electrical contacts. Sometimes my own remote
goes dead for no reason. In my case, removing and reinserting the
batteries always corrects the problem. I always take the time to clean
the battery contacts too whenever this happens - even if the battery
contacts look clean. Lastly, never assume that new replacement batteries
are good. Always check the new batteries first with a battery checker.
Not all batteries are created equal. You can get yourself a battery
checker for only a few dollars at Radio Shack or from some other
electronics retail outlet.

Good health and happiness...

Just fixed a remote with a bad solder joint on one of the crystal leads.

2)corrosion due to liquid such as cola or beer spilled on unit
Seems like I have to clean the keypad contacts on one or the other
of my remotes about once every 6 months.

3)cracked circuit board from rough handling (dropped)
Haven't had this problem - yet.

In my experience, majority of the times one observes symptoms you
describe, its the crystal/resonator. Try replacing it.

You have to be kidding! This is like saying: "My car doesn't run, must
need a new motor".

Most likely is a dead battery.

Try going over to Epanorama.net. they have all sorts of info on
servicing remotes and sussing out the codes.

(thinking of a good excuse to get myself a new toy)
Also is night vision device any use for looking at sources of
overheating or heat escape through building insulation? Are COBRAs a
good brand?

You can see IR flashes on a monitor connected to a surveillance
camera. I haven't tried it, but I suspect you may also be able to see
the flashes with a webcam.

You can also detect the flashes using a known good IR led emitter on a
scope. An IR led emitter makes a pretty good IR detector too. The IR
led emitter can be easily scavenged from a dead remote. Just arrange
the 2 IR leds pointed towards each other at close range and observe
the scope while pressing the remote's buttons. On a working remote a
brief train of digital pulses will show up on the scope trace. It's
just a simple go/no-go test.

Easiest, is to look at it through the electronic viewfinder of a digital
camera or camcorder...any CCD cam will image the IR.

These might include IR filters, otherwise pictures would be
overexposed in the summer, no?
