HELP : Question about DC-motor driver

The above link shows a circuit design for a
motordriver.

What is the purpose of the resistance in front of
each gate of the MOSFET-transistors?

And can someone please tell me, what exactly goes on in this circuit?

and why use MOSFET-transistors instead of other kinds of transistors?
