Help! I'm ignorant about this stuff..

My Toshiba DVD player went out. I found the following instructions on
the web for fixing it, but don't completely understand them:

"Next add a 56k ohm .25 watt -/+ 2% carbon film
resistor between the gate and ground of Q801"

Q801 is transistor - which I have replaced. What is the "gate" and
"ground"? I have the correct resistor, but am not sure where to
install it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Bert

Thanks, John. I'm clear on the Gate - I solder one end of the resistor
to the Input wire. Do I then solder the other end to a ground on the
board somewhere? Thanks.

Hi Bert:

First let me apologise for top posting, I'm not sure of the correct
procedure on this group.
The Gate you mention is the "Input" of the device, and "Ground" I assume in
this case means "Signal Ground" or "Chassis Ground".

The device that the modification refers to is a "FET" Field Effect
Transistor, and will have two other connection points, a "Source" and
"Drain".

Hope that helps.
John.

If, as you admit, your electronics knowledge is less than rudimentary, it's
best not to attempt any kind of internal work, both from a technical and
safety point of view. If it's a recent purchase, it will almost certainly
void any warranty that you may have.

Thanks, but the DVD player is a low end unit that it is out of
warranty and not worth paying a service tech to repair. I've already
replaced the transistor, diode, and fuse - and it is now working fine.
I would like to add the resistor in the right place and finish the job
correctly.

As the instruction says put the resistor between gate and ground. You will
have to check which pin of the FET is at ground. I take it this is an add on
resistor ??

Right, it is an add-on resistor. Thanks.
