The reason that there is a timer on lamp usage is because after the rated
number of hours for the lamp it is much more likely that the lamp will fail
by exploding, leaving conductive fragments throughout the unit requiring a
major dissassembly to clean. Best to replace the lamp. Best to have the
unit checked and cleaned by a skilled tech as the lamp is changed, but if
you prefer to do it yourself your sharp distributor should have the service
literature on the unit. Check with Tritronics.

Jim/Sherri,
I can't find anything online for that model (actually an XV-Z1U), but you
should be able to order an owners manual from Sharp that should explain how to
reset the counter. Lamps in LCD projectors have a limited life and the risk of
failure by exploding increases as they age. Therefore, most projectors have a
built-in timer that shuts the projector off when the lamp reaches end of life.
As it approaches that time, a warning may be seen on screen and/or via a panel
LED. Lamps can fail by failing to start up or going dim or exploding at any
time.
Normally, the timer is reset (should only be done after a lamp change)
with a series of keypresses, but each model is unique in how it's done. Some
can be accessed in the menu, others require a rather complex "code" be punched
in so you can't do it accidently. The replacement lamp may include instructions
on resetting the counter but if not, Sharp might be your only source for that
information. Good luck!
