Hello folks,

I have an IBM 21" monitor with Sony WEGA tube (model P260).
The image is too bright, and on-screen menu brightness control
range is insufficient to achieve comfortable brightness. Even when
set to 0, the image is way too bright to use the monitor. I don't
see any other problems with the monitor.

Is there any way to lower the brightness? I've often been able to
use internal controls in such cases. Many monitors have
focus / brightness adjustment knobs on flyback transformer
(if that's the right term). This one has two focus controls
instead (they do work).

Anybody knows where global brightness regulator is inside,
for IBM monitors with Sony tubes?

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Assuming the video output voltages are correct to the crt pcb, all
adjustments are made with factory authorized only software and interface.
It simply would cost too much for you to buy the interface and software for
only a few monitors.

There is something most likely failing if the brightness problem has been
occuring over time. The monitor would require proper service. In anycase, if
it needs proper service, and setup, you will have to bring it to the Sony
service rep. The service manual (required), software, and hardware interface
would be too exepensive for you to purchase, just to adjust one monitor.

Hi, I had a similar problem, in reverse; the picture was too dark,
even at maximum setting of the monitor control.

My PC is a PIII on an Intel 810 motherboard with its on board graphics
card. The driver for this 810 card has a software setting to change
the brightness-contrast-gamma setting of the monitor. Tweaking this
brought the desired setting range right in the centre of the monitor's
hardware setting.

Hope this helps.

Does it have something called "color return" in the option, or color
menu? If it does, try activating that option after it's been on for
about 30 min. This does an auto CRT bias adjustment and will take
care of the brightness problem if nothing has failed. I don't know
why, but I've seen a lot of 19" and 21" Sony Wega monitors with a
picture that's too bright, but this always takes care of it.
