Heatsinks and mechanical drawings in general

I have just selected a heatsink manufacturer on the basis that I could
determine relevant dimensions from their website drawing of the
extrusion. Four other manufacturers didn't provide sufficient
information and this one only just slips in with a guesstimate of one
dimension.

Totally FUCKS ME OFF when people try and sell SHIT and can't be TOSSED
to give you relevant information about it.

Try Aavid, they have decent mechanical drawings.

Ever tried working out an LCD modules dimensions...ARGHHH, think
densitons so called drawings were the worse.

Bopla (phoenix mecano) case are nice but they used to use audtocad
whip, grrrrr, and now you have to ask em for a dxf!
I can get tech data on stuff like
"Tolerances for Chill Castings (DIN 1688 T.3)"
on the site, but no way a bleeding drawing!

Then you go to ,say,
http://hammondmfg.com/1455.htm
all the info is there,
God Bless sensible web sites with easy to get info

Three things are certain:
Death, taxes and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

They're either just too stupid to realize that they should post the
information if they want your business (and mine) or they _really_ want
you to call them.

I've noticed that mechanical part vendors are _way_ behind the
semiconductor vendors when it comes to posting relevant information on
their web pages -- but I also see them slowly realizing that they need
to if they want to sell. I try to reinforce this by buying from the
ones who do a good job, and telling them so.

Yup. Hammond's ACAD drawings help. Serpac has drawings too. It's
nice being able to work out a final assemble right there in ACAD.
Catalog dimensions just don't cut it. You need details on mounting
pads and how much space is taken up by the battery compartment. All
the details help.

indeed. The corollary (which I try to do) is this: Send a (clearly marked)
copy of a purchase order to the company you DIDNT buy stuff from, along with
a polite letter pointing out that they dipped out on the $$ because they
hide relevant data from customers. "you guys suk because there is no data"
is nowhere near as effective as, say, "aavid got a $10,000 order. You would
have had the order, if only your website had contained the data I needed."
So far, my attempts at this have been about as useful as pissing myself
whilst wearing a dark suit - it gave me a warm feeling, but nobody
noticed....

Order takers and CSRs wouldn't. Commissioned sales dweebs /
management twinkies might. Owners and officers should, or else be
shot before they sink the ship.

Alas Mike, reality never seems to get in the way of corporate types. We
always used to refer to the "golden mile" when I worked for a large
company - the sales/marketing people. They had the best free piss (kiwi
slang for booze, as in "lets get pissed"), always top-shelf stuff (we had to
pay for our beer in the canteen - a kiwi tradition is getting on the piss at
work on a friday night. someone invariably showed up with a keg, and many a
week I would stagger home utterly trashed at 3am, having left car, keys,
wallet and access card at work. When I went to work in MA, I sure missed
that. Although when I left to return to NZ the CEO shouted several dozen
beers, which we all drank at work - Im sure the company lawyer would have
spat the dummy had he known), had 2 hour lunch breaks, got paid way more
than the engineers and generally did fuck all. except sell product that
doesnt exist, with timeframes that cant be met. wankers.

You are quite right about semiconductor vendors (for the most part) being
onto it. I am hell impressed with LT and LTspice - now thats what I call
providing info to customers! Semikron are great like that too, with semisel.
I really like prices too - when I do a design, I often run through 5-6
different concepts, to try and pick the best (most cost-effective) one.
budgetary pricing is imperative for that process.

Cheers
Terry

Hi DNA,

How is everything?
Long time since, I found the papers with our smps discussion, all your
spice models and such.
Then I thought I might say hello!

What are you up to these days? Are you still pissed off?? Do you still
think voltage-mode is a give away?

I'm still waiting for your switching model.................. :)

Best regards
Stefan
