HD settop boxes with VGA out

Hi

Question ...

has anyone had play or used some of these HD settop digital boxes that
have? ..I suppose VGA out ..and had them connected to a VGA monitor.

I was wondering ..if it works like that ..and what sort of pics you
get ...on say a 21" VGA monitor... using one of these boxes.. Ones I've
seen are still rather expensive 700-$800 ..still bit expensive to play
around with .. just to find this out ...

But from the setup my conclusion is that the picture should be very good
(better than normal TV) ..is that the case or am I dreaming ? :)

I know of a good 21" PC monitor I could put to such a use ...

better check the output of the boxes, you may need a monitor that
supports a 15kHz scan rate - rare.

I thought most PC monitors will do those frequencies and higher
depending on the resolution ...

In fact most wont do the lowest ones anymore.

And that just happens to be the TV compat ones.

Why not check the specs on your monitor in the handbook. Very few SVGA and
above monitors have ever supported 15 kHz scan rate, and certainly not for
many years. However I doubt that anyone would design a digital set top box
that required such a monitor.
I may be wrong of course :)

check on www.dba.org.au

The guys where playing around with the DGtech boxes on VGA monitors!

You need to play around with the way the unit outputs the VGA refresh.

About 8 years ago I went to a hardware expo with an Amiga programmer friend
of mine. He would go up to the sales guy and ask them about monitors, the
would do their sales spiel, he'd nod and then ask them if it would scan down
to 30Hz. He got sick of asking after the 10th rep had fallen on the floor
and pissed themselves laughing.
