Hi,

I ordered some 4N25 opto-isolators from Maplin, expecting 6-pin DIPs, but
I've received 8-pin DIPs instead, each marked

12C508A
04/P08R
(M) 0337

Are these the same as a 4N25, and if so, which pair of pins do I ignore? Or
have I been sent the wrong part?

(cpemma (in this NG) kindly pointed me at a circuit to drive a EL inverter
from my PC's HDD LED pins. Circuit is at
http://www.mexbro.co.uk/bit/optobooster.gif .)

Any help appreciated; google is a little too forthcoming but not very
enlightening.

That sounds like a PIC microprocessor, to me.

Yes, what you have are microprocessors, not optos.

Have you asked the people that you got them from? Because whatever
those chips are, they're not 4N25s. 4N25s would have "4N25" on them.

Just get some more 4N25's and you are well in front !!

They are PIC 8-Pin, 8-Bit CMOS Microcontrollers chips from www.microchip.com
and can be used for modification of Play Station PSX, PS2 etc. Cost around
USD 1.60. Better returm them if you don't have any use.
