hard drive with PCMIA interface

I have a 10 year old HP laptop in my shop - it has a PCMIA interface. The
laptop is a hp Omnibook 300, the hdd is a WD Caviar.
The laptop does not have a floppy drive. The client would like the hdd wiped
to DOD standards and rebuilt with an o/s.

I have googled ... and have not found any connectors to interface to the hdd
(externally to a desktop).

Suggestions re wiping this hdd down and rebuilding it would be appreciated.

btw I am aware the laptop has minimal value but the client would like to
donate the unit to her favorite charity.

If anyone has a similar hdd with an o/s available for sale please email
directly to

I used to own a 350. I will tell you one thing. You can reformat the
hard drive, but NEVER REPARTITION IT. You will learn from this. Well, if
you have partition magic, this doesnt matter.

anyway, just quickformat the drive, and sys the drive with dos. then
creat a windows\options\cabs and copy over the windows cab files.

then pop the drive back into the other machine. it will boot into a c:\
prompt, and from there you can install windows.

anyway, about repartitioning, If you try to repartition that drive, you
wil screw up, because repartitioning will wipe the active partition.

and if you creat a new partition, you WILL NOT be able to set it active,
because its not your primary drive, and then the other machine will not
boot ever again, unless you have partition magic, then you might be able
to set it active again. Be forwarned. if you have norton ghost, and a
image of that drive size, it will set it active for you.

take my advice, never delete the partition. jsut reformat it.

One other caution on this machine, at least if it is the machine it is.
I picked up 3 of these at a hamfest ~2 years ago, figuring they would make
cute little terminal laptops or whatever, mainly because of their size. I
proceeded to install Windows 95 on them. Turned out I needed a BIOS update
to install Windows 95 on them. So I updated the BIOS. Then the machine
prompted for a password.
Long story short-there was a version of the BIOS released (and installed in
many machines) that had a password function which did not work. You could
set a password, but the machine would never prompt for it. However, if you
upgrade the BIOS, it will prompt for the password on boot, and there really
isn't much you can do them.

Does the machine require a password to boot, or just to enter the BIOS
setup?

If it still boots (e.g. you can load DOS/Windows9x), you can often use
DEBUG to corrupt the CMOS checksum and clear its settings (including
password).

To do this, type the following EXACTLY at the DEBUG prompt:

o 70 2E
o 71 FF
q

(o is the lowercase letter 'o', not a numeral)
and powercycle the machine.
