Hackable DVD/VCR Combo Units

I'm going to purchase a DVD-VCR Combo unit in a few weeks, and I want
to be able to play foreign DVD's on the unit. I'm in region 1 and I
want to play region 2 DVD's specifically.

Can someone inform me as to which is the most "hackable" DVD/VCR Combo
units on the market in the US. As well, how can I get info on how to
"hack" the DVD/VCR unit. I want to totally make it region free
forever, if possible. Thanks in advance.

You might want to ask that question on alt.home-theater.misc. Seems to me I've seen it discussed there in the past. A google search would probably bring it up. Also, I think that one of the machines that lends itself to this is one of those very inexpensive DVD players (Apex?). I think that you get at the region control via the service menu.

Hope this helps some.

First of all, get separate units, the combo's are crap. I've got an
inexpensive Apex player which was easy to update the firmware.

And an cheap DVD player like the Apex is less like crap because it is a
separate component? This is curious logic. I agree that combo units are
mostly built poorly and one chances losing the use of both units if there is
a problem in a common area that is not worth fixing, but I don't see that
separate components that are built to be disposable are much different in
quality.

Generally yes, the combo units are the crap of the crap as far as build
quality, the Apex is inexpensive but it's not one of the dirt cheap models.
Also expect a DVD player to be pretty much disposeable, if you have separate
units you only lose the one that fails.

Thanks for the input guys! I wanted to buy a combo unit to keep the
cables to a minimum in back of my t.v. Now I'm either going to
purchase an expensive DVD/VCR combo or just the Apex DVD player.
