After some more research, I think I will try the CAT32 chip
http://www.catalyst-semiconductor.com/documents/32.pdf
However I have a few problems. I don't want to have a special PCB made
for this project. So I was going to use an SOT-23-6 to .100" pin
adapter board from digikey, and then the rest of the components on a
generic prototype board.. After looking closer, I found that the only
recommended inductor I could find has to be purchased in quantities of
2000. From reading the data sheet it sounds like having a very low DCR
is one of the more important properties of the inductor. I found a high
current inductor of the correct value that has an even lower DCR than
the recommended ones, will that work fine? Specifically I am talking
about digikey PN |M5804-ND data sheet,
http://www.jwmiller.com/pdf2/5800.pdf
I can find capacitors with the recommended specs and the diode but both
are surface mount, can someone recommend a non surface mount capacitor
and diode that will be compatible?
BTW, for the dimming I was going to experiment with a 555 timer and a
photo resistor to create the PWM input to the dimmer control pin of the
CAT32.
