gschem -- List of footprints

Hello,

I am starting using the gEDA suite. For the beginning, it is a bit
complicated to assign a footprint to every part. Which footprints do exist?
I do not want to parse all .inc files in /usr/share/pcb/m4 to find out.

Is there a list of all footprints ?

John Luciani maintains an archive of PCB footprints at:

http://www.luciani.org/geda/pcb/pcb-footprint-list.html

The M4 footprints in /usr/share/pcb/m4 are obsolete, IMHO. Use John's
instead.

Thanks for the link. I looked for the footprints I need. Unfortunately, I
still don't find what I need. Is there a footprint for the DO-4 package?
For the DO-35? And for the DO-201? Furthermore, I am looking for the
footprint of the MMA0204 resistor package. Am I wrong or do I have to draw
all footprints myself?

If you can't find the footprints in the built-in libs or at John's
site, you probably need to create them yourself. Users of most EDA
programs need to create their own symbols & footprints frequently,
particularly for less-common parts. (Although I agree that DO-35
isn't that uncommon. Why not just use an 1/8 W through-hole resistor
footprint if you're in a pinch? Make sure you check the dimensions of
both parts before you do this . . . . .)

Here's a document which describes the newlib file format, which might
be useful to you when creating PCB footprints:

Finally, there is a dedicated server whose purpose is to serve as a
repository of gEDA symbols and footprints. It's currently empty (it's
new), but if you create some footprints and want to contribute them to
the community, you can do so here:

Finally, I thought my problem with the diode-footprints to be solved. I used
the footprint: DIODE_LAY 400.
Then, I fortunately remarked that the diode footprint is reversed compared
to the symbol. Instead of a blocking diode, I now have a conducting diode!

This incident nearly takes all my confidence in gEDA away. If I wouldn't
have remarked it, my circuit with a couple of very precious ICs would have
burned away! And I cannot examine the every circuit output before
soldering. Is there any advice someone could give me? Or should I better
leave gEDA? I do not want the latter considering all the work I already had
with gEDA.
