What's a good "grease" to use on the mechanisms in a VCR etc ?

Anything special for electronic applications or can I use the high
temperature bearing grease I have for the car ?(don't laugh)
Looks a bit too sticky for the VCR.

This is a graphite based grease designed for the application. These
lubricants are sold by the electronic parts manufactures that are designed
for this type of application.

The current version of "Phonolube" is a nice fine-grade lithium based
grease. Good for plastic gears.
MCM sells it, don't know of any other sources. You could Google it.

Lithium and white lithium grease may be used.

However, it is recommended that you use molytone grease. This kind of grease
is usually sold by repair shop suppliers. - Reinhart

I've used numerous exotic-sounding greases for small mechanism parts, and
found that Luberex by GC Electronics is the best all purpose lube. They
describe it as a calcium stearate base grease. This product stays wet and
lubricates very well.
GC Electronics division GC Thorsen Inc. p/n 10-1206

For applications where an oil is a better choice, Caig Labs has some very
good products. I've used the DeOxit liquids in place of oil. It migrates and
wets parts well, and doesn't appear to dry out. Even though this isn't the
specific application that this product was intended for, it works great.

I don't like using general purpose lithium greases because they always seem
to turn into a waxy semi-solid gunk if there is exposure to dust in free
air.
