Granada TV Repair Question

I'm having a problem with my tv, and am hoping someone can help. I See
a 1.5 inch black bar at the top of the screen and a smaller
whiteish/tracelucent band directly under that. The rest of the picture
comes in... it's just the top of the screen that is missing/scrunched
up. This is my only tv, and hope that repairing this is NOT too
expensive :( Could it be a few caps that need to be replaced?

Any help, or direction on where to start would be appreciated.

Thanks very much!

Hi...

Best I can recall there was no granada brand; I think
it was a badge put on many different sets used for a
huge rental company named granada...

So, don't know the set specifically, but given the
age of it can offer generic help...

Turn the set on, get out a makeup or shaving mirror,
get ahold of a pocket screwdriver... (plastic is preferable,
otherwise just be cautious) Get behind the set, find one
or more controls with starting with v (or an acronym)
like v height or v size (v could be vert or vertical)
Note the original position, then rotate them one at a time
a little until one of them makes the raster reach the top
of the screen (plus a little more)

If this won't do it, then one small electrolytic needs to
be changed.

Vertical circuit malfunction. Due to age probably failing capacitors but
not guaranteed. Given the age it might use one of the custom Sanyo JU
vertical output modules which is long since not available from any source,
tv will not be repairable at reasonable cost.

Typically a $75 total repair or less. No way to get any closer without
actually doing bench diagnosis.

Given the age, 20 years, unless the picture looks near perfect (to an
experienced technician), I would start looking for another set if it is
anything over 1/3rd the cost of an average quality replacement. (not your
junk no name brands)

If the rest of the picture looks fine,( not stretched - etc.) then it most
likely is a 30 cent electolytic cap of about 250 volt sitting very near the
vertical output transistors. Follow the yoke wires down to the chassis and
look there about for the capacitor. Change it out for one of same ?uf and
at least same or above voltage. If that dont clear it up, look for a new
tv..

Thanks for all the feedback everyone, it is very much appreciated!!!

jtech, picture on tv is fine otherwise... that's great news, I'll have a look see :)

Cheers,
Sherri
