Hello,

Rockby are selling a (two types actually) GPS module, but I cannot seem to
find any data on it.

Type number is TU70-D100, and TU70-200.

Google searches seem to give some marketing info, but no real technical
information.

Does anyone know anything about these modules.

Thanks,
James.

PS: my email address is mashed, if you wish to reply directly please remove

Don't know about those modules, but it's a fairly safe bet that they
would have a NEMA standard protocol interface, so all you should need
are the pinouts and you should be able to at least get some useful
data out.

Dave :)

Hello

It looks the same as one I bought a while ago: TU70-D100-041. I paid a
lot more than the Rockby price.

I've never been able to get a connector for it. It's a miniature 5-pin
plug which takes single core wires; made by JST from memory. I tried to
get some samples from JST but that was a dead end.

Without the correct connector it would be very easy to do serious damage
to the unit by trying to connect directly to it.

I don't know if this would help, but Farnell have some JST connectors, 1.5mm pitch
2, 3, 4 and 6 pin housing and headers.

4 way shrouded header B4B-ZR FEC 335-7600 @ $1.88 ea (2002 prices).
They've even got the crimps to go with it. Extra of course.

Crimp tool $498.60... :(

Thanks for the reference.

The socket on the module has 5-pins in about 4.5mm. Each pin is tiny;
probably about the diameter of a cats wisker.

I've got the data sheets for the module and connector somewhere here.
I think the modules should be supplied by the manufacturer (Conexant)
with leads; otherwise it's not much use.

JST supposedly supply samples from their web site but it didn't work
when I tried to get some. They sell the connectors on reels of lots.

It may be worth asking Rockby to track some down before buying the GPS
module. If they have enough of them it may be worthwhile their getting a
full reel.

Thanks all for replying.

I called and spoke to a fellow there who told me that they are sold without
the connector. The model number on the TU70-200 is wrong and it is also a
TU70-100, these have logic level serial interfaces. I'd be reluctant to buy
without a good way of connecting to the device.

Hello

Here's a link to a photo of the connector.
http://www.pmb.co.nz/images/gps_2l.jpg

The ruler shows how small it is.

The metal cover is soldered to the pcb, so you can't get at the back of
the connector.

I know someone who did get one of these modules working by soldering
onto the pins of the connector; quite delicate work.

He wrote a visual basic program to translate the data from the module
into more useful information.

Small cutters should be able to help remove part of the shielding.

It looks like the pins have about 1mm spacing. The pins should be able
to be removed, or thin wires soldered onto them without much problem.
A strong light, a steady hand, tweezers and a magnifying glass should
enable you to repeat your associate's feat.

He wrote a visual basic program to translate the data from the module
