GoVideo DVP853 freezes

Got an interesting problem with this cheapo DVD player, it plays just fine
for about 40 minutes then it freezes up and won't respond to controls. Just
ejected the disc and hit play again right away and it's working again at the
moment. Seems to happen on any disc. There was an electrolytic in the power
supply that was getting hot so I replaced it, new one is staying cool, still
freezes though, image just locks up with some minor corruption. Anyone seen
this before? I know it's not worth spending a lot of time on but if it's
something simple I'd like to fix it.

Probably the pickup. Very common problem on DVD players in general.
Unfortunately the repair cost would exceed the cost of replacement.

Normally that's what I'd assume too, but why would that cause it to freeze
after playing fine for almost an hour?

Hmm now that I think about it, I wonder if the lube has dried up? That might
explain why it freezes in the same place more or less.

Check for some components that may be overheating, or a component that has
become thermo sensitive. This is common with caps, and sometimes
semiconductors. This would include the pickup.

Actually, this is one of the most common failure modes for a laser pickup.
It plays a while, then skips, freezes, pixelizes, or stops.

Lame, oh well, guess I'll part it out, it's not a particularly nice player
anyway.
