Google swings the axe at Motorola

Internet giant Google says it plans to lay off about 4000 employees at Motorola, the mobile phone maker it purchased in
May, in order to return the company to profitability.

"While we expect this strategy to create new opportunities and help return Motorola's mobile devices unit to
profitability, we understand how hard these changes will be for the employees concerned," a company spokesperson told
AFP on Monday.

According to The New York Times, the reorganisation plan calls for laying off about 20 per cent of Motorola's workforce
and closing a third of its 94 offices worldwide.

wWell, if you spent less time being a cross posting troll and more time
reading various information sources, they are just following modern
business practise; chuck out the workers first irrespective of the
wealth of techncal experience that also goes.

OTOH, flogging a few to death sometimes makes the rest work harder.

Motorola has been on a downward spiral since they spun off Freescale.
The mobile division were eating up the profits from the corporate
(Symbol) division, so they split in order to get someone to buy them
out. Google obliged (or more likely probably orchestrated the split),
now they're cleaning up the mess.

Google's plan is to do a few phones well rather than lots badly.
Motorola introduced 27 different models last year apparently. If you
are only going to introduce 2 or 3 then you don't need as many people.

Also

"While the planned layoffs of 20 percent of staff haven't begun, Google
has already gotten rid of 40 percent of Motorola's vice presidents"

which sounds like they have dumped an acumulation of useless middle
management.

"What's going on" is very simple.

Profit is income minus expenses.

Employees are expenses.

If anyone REALLY thinks that's what businesses think, they have never
been anything but a simple "employee".

The big problem is that while most other phone makers produce a few to a
SINGLE model of phone, Motorola makes over 20 models.

They want to try a different business model, and if you aren't making 20
+ models of phones, you don't need as many people to support that
effort. Simple enough.

Not always. For a firm with rising expectations, employees are not
just expenses.

For firms in a declining market, they are much more likely to be
"just expenses."

Employees are expenses.

Doing multiple spinoffs is OK if one has the right base.
But they ignored the power architecture technology they had
at hand - a huge advantage - and went ARM; good luck making
the difference now.
And when we look at the AMOLED displays Samsung alone can
make (at least for now) it is not hard to predict which way
things will go. Google are also well positioned with their
control over android but this is yet another linux after all,
not very unique at all.

One bunch of suits oversold their assett (employees not assett)

The second bunch of suits now find out

The second bunch of suits can now justify anything
