Gateway Crystal Scan 1572 FS

I have a Gateway Crystal Scan 1572 FS monitor that has a green screen. The
thing is that if I turn it on end the screen will become all blotchy, but
there are parts of the screen that will be in perfect color. When I hit the
degauss button it will turn green. This tells me that all the colors are
working. Does anyone have any ideas for me check out? Thanks, Jim
PS, I'm not putting my email addy here cause when I did so last month I have
gotten over 50 emails with the famous MS virus.

The degaussing circuit may not be working correctly, and when the tube is
degaussed, the green drive circuit may no longer be in specs. The service
tech would go through the degaussing circuit to determine the failed parts.

The bias voltage to the CRT elements must be checked to determine if it is
out of specs, especially on the green channel. If so, the circuits that
control the bias voltage will have to be troubleshooted to find the
defective parts.

There is also a possibility, that the tube is displaying too much green
because there is a failure in the electron gun itself. This all has to be
properly verified by someone who has the proper tools and training to make
this type of determination.

Your logical choices are to either give the monitor out for a proper
estimate, or to replace it. Considering the low cost of a CRT monitor these
days in relation to labour costs, it may turn out to be a better decision to
replace the monitor. I am seeing some very good quality 19 inch monitors
being advertised at less than $250 these days. Some of the very good 17 inch
monitors are typically going for about $160.

When you consider about 1 or 2 hours labour, transport, and then the parts
on a monitor that has a few years on it, there has to be an intelligent
decision to make.
