The Garmin Approach G5 is a great GPS unit that has proven to be quite accurate. I especially like the capability to touch the screen to find the distance to a point on the fairway and also see the distance from that point to the green. The problem I have is the lack of support from Garmin on requesting additional golf courses. Its been a couple of months since the product came out and they still do not have a download site!! I would not recommend purchasing this product until Garmin provides the download site for additional courses.
We used one in our golf league group last night and I hit more greens than I normally do and shot four stokes better for nine than the week before. It was very accurate and especially helpful if you weren't in the middle of the fairway and if you had a blind shot to the green where you couldn't point a laser rangefinder. It definitely gives you an advantage. The guy carrying it eagled the last hole.
My son and I used this on a local course for the first time and it performed great. No more looking for markers or taking the time to walk off an estimate (er, OK - especially when I'm not in the fairway). We have some large greens thankfully and being able to simply move the flag on the device for a much more accurate reading is super. Also, those few great drives I had - the G5 made it simple to get the exact yardage (did not break any records though). Only 1 of my 7 (regular home area) courses is not programmed in yet but I see it's on schedule in the next update. If yours isn't, simply let Garmin know like I did. Great unit, now if only my golf got better
Update note: Today (4/26) I downloaded Garmins latest course database to the device and now all my courses are available.
THis looks like a great golf GPS, but their list of courses is very short. Make sure you check befoe you purchase this product, that your course is indeed supported. I do not own the unit nor have I seen it. But I play golf a 5 courses in VA, and 1 in Oregon and none are listed here.
