garage door - solenoid issue?

I have a garage door motor unit that is playing up.

There is alternating clicking sound which might be the solenoid.

I have noticed that when put a broom handle up to touch the unit, it
triggers this clicking noise. What is the noise? Why does it happen when
the unit comes in contact with the broom handle?
