The photocell at the bottom of the door; the emitter and the receiver
are connected to the same 2 terminals. How does it sense when it's blocked?
How would one bypass the photocells?

One would avoid doing that. Garage door openers really do kill and/or
injure people when they malfunction. Bypassing the safety mechanisms
would constitute deliberately taking an action that could kill or injure
someone.

Either make it work right, replace it with one that does, or open and
close the door manually.

Be prepared to be sued down to your shorts
when a child is crushed because you defeated the safety interlocks.

No kids around here. Besides the other door does not have that photo
cell dumb cunt safety device. So I'll make them both the same by
removing the existing one.

depends on the make,

i've got an old-ish chamberlin door opener, the blue square box with the
motor in it and the connections and adjustments at the rear.

with my opener the beam break sensors are optional, remove them and it
operates on the force sensor alone, connect them and the beam break sensors
work with the force sensors, (which is handy as my dog proved she can get in
the way of the door closing and not trigger the beam break, but i'd set up
the force sensors to just over what it took to close the door, so it
reversed the second it touched her, but she had already dropped to the floor
and rolled out of the way)

So just remove the sensors and see what happens, if the door works, then
make sure you set up at the very least the closing force adjuster to just
over what it takes to close, the opening force bit dosent generaly hurt
people, more punts them out the way, but if a car is parked against the door
it's another matter :)

if the sensors work, then not really sure why you want to remove them, but
if the opener wont work with out them connected, then arange them so they
are facing each other somewhere other than accross the door opening,

if they are falsely triggering the door to reverse, then firstly clean the
lenses, as they get dusty easily especialy if you do any wood work in the
garage,
then check alignment, mine have red leds on them, constiantly on means they
are aligned, flashing is out of alignment or beam blocked.

Retroreflector?

How would one bypass the photocells?
Clip lead?

Good Luck!
