None of the newsgroups in the sci.electronics.* hierarchy are intended
for buying and selling. An obvious giveaway is that none of them have
"forsale" or "marketplace" in their name.

When sci.electronics was split back in '95, an associated newsgroup

Oh just stop it, it was decided long ago that if parts were apropos as
in "hobbyist", that they were welcome. We just didn't want big screen
TV commercials on here.

I know I never decided that. Letting any ads in is a slippery slope,
because then others can point to them and say "they can do it, so I will
too". I've seen it in the rec.radio.amateur.* hierarchy, with some pretty
odd ads showing up that have nothing to do with radio, in newsgroups that
were not intended to be buy and sell newsgroup.

We have become used to advertising, so not enough complain when people start
trying to sell stuff on the newsgroups. But a key difference is that the
ads on TV and in the newspaper pays for the delivery of the content to us
(though, likely the advertisers see the content merely as a lure to
attract readers to the ads). Any ads in discussion newsgroups are merely
opportunism; they see an audience and assume the right to advertise.

Beyond all that, take note that even if ads had a place here, the
guy in question is not here to "help the hobbyist". He is hitting
a bunch of widely spread newsgroups for the sake of selling his junk.
And this is surplus to his business, which accounts for the odd and
limited selection. He's been trying to get rid of his surplus parts
for years, and doesn't care where he posts to do it.

Weeks at least, exxagerator. And still, his parts are apropos.
If I didn't have a bunch of my own *I'd* buy some!

People who pay to advertise stick irrelevant unrelated shit all over
the place, but people who don't JUST advertise and sell professionally
who sell what we can use specically, do us a favor. I've bought lots
of components and test equipment off these newsgroups, and I know that
hobbyism would be lost without it, so fuck off.
