free datasheets

Has anyone noticed that all of the component datasheets that are at
chipdocs.com ($100 per year subscription) are available from
alldatasheet.com for free. The databases seem to be exactly the same
and the datasheets even have the same directoy structure.

I'll be asking for my money back.....what a rippoff! Would suggest
using alldatasheet.com from now on.

Even though I didn't allow it to install datasheet.exe on my machine, I was
still able to open the pdf datasheets for a couple of parts I tried. It is a
bit annoying to have to have to keep saying no to installing the .exe, but not
$100 worth!

I think thats a java app that tries to automatically install a
shortcut to their website. Also, I asked chipdocs if they were doing
the dirty on their customers. This was their reply....

We have got a lot of rare datasheets, which are not places
on any other site. We renew our database every day and
the subscription fee - I must say- is rather low.

I find $95 dollars a bit steep for something that is free on another

Looks like they have a pretty broad selection of specs.

Running XP Service Pack 2 w/ popup block enabled it goes right to spec
sheet in .pdf for me.

It's cheap,
but it's certainly is another database with less components.
Try for instance HA13440 (a very common floppy drive motor controler).

Another is datasheetarchive.com.
Or else just go to the manufacturer's website.

Sometimes I think that these parasites operate on the same principle
that spammer use. There are millions of users out there and there is
always a percentage, however small, that will be suckered into paying
for your commodity. Even tho they get it for free somewhere else.

Look at one of the first spammers, Canter and Siegel. They offered for
$50 what the gov't offered for free.

CAPS available through <http://www.freetradezone.com> for a substantial
fee really does seem to have a collection of rare datasheets that are not
available anywhere else (except in old hardcopy databooks). And they
appear to have the datasheet for the AM79C950 which I haven't seen
anywhere else. They were free, but they went to charging for access
before I downloaded it.

If there is a free service as extensive as CAPS or a way of accessing CAPS
without paying a fee, I'd really like to know about it.

I looked at a bunch of the sites mentioned in this thread, and have
concluded that www.alldatasheet.com is the best of the group.

I looked up datasheets on 4 components (LM78L05 voltage regulator from
National Semiconductor, LM741 op amp from National, 1N4148 diode from
Philips, and S1133 photodiode from Hamamatsu).

Here are the results:

www.alldatasheet.com had all 4 datasheets
www.datasheetarchive.com had all 4 datasheets
(But they required typing in an 8-digit "security code" for each
download, which is a little annoying)
www.sierraic.com had 2 out of 4 datasheets (for the two National
components)
www.digchip.com requires you to sign up as a member, which I did not
want to do.

But which is necessary to prevent database rapers, pillagers and
plunderers from stealing their database with an automated 'bot. But
what's worse is the greedy SOBs attack their database with so many
queries that the database gets bogged down and can't be accessed by
others or just crashes. So everyone suffers.

And BTW, I've used their database enough to know that the security code
is not fixed at 8 digits, it varies from time to time. It started out
simpler, but apparently that version was not enough to prevent the
damage. So the price has been increased annoyance. This is no
different than the free email services such as Hotmail, which had to
start using "CAPTCHA"s to prevent the spammers from automatedly creating
millions of free email accounts to send their spams.

Then it was rumored that the bastard spammers were using security codes
tn access porn sites, and each time a human typed in the security code,
he was actually signing up a new free email account for the spammer.
Dirty, rotten, evil spammers!

www.sierraic.com had 2 out of 4 datasheets (for the two National
components)
www.digchip.com requires you to sign up as a member, which I did not
want to do.

Same with datasheetcatalog.com. Why should I have to sign up (and some
databases require $$ for a subscription) for information that was meant
to be free from the manufacturers, and was taken without their
permission and put in a database, without their permission?

halfway between a 1N4148 a 1N4004 rectifier.

The other interesting thing is that modern production of older diode part
numbers are very much better in many respects than the original spec.

For instance, one wouldn't usually fit a 1N4001 in the the Schottky diode
position of a small SMPS but looking at o'scope traces and i/p current,
it was indistinguishable from the pukka item other than Vf.

There has been some talk recently about someone who worked on SMPSes
that had gone bad after a few months. Turned out the dummies used
regular rectifier diodes instead of using the correct fast recovery
rectifiers. After replacing them with the fast recovery types, the
SMPSes kept working, as they were supposed to. So, the moral of the
story is, don't expect a regular rectifier to do the job of a fast
recovery type.

400,000 extra datasheets in our January 2005 update. Many for rare or
obsolete parts.

Also it's true that our servers have been getting abused by some
users who feel the need to download all 100 gig of datasheets. We have
noticed many datasheets that we have scanned ourselves appearing on
other datasheet sites.

We have also been suffering from denial of service attacks on our
database server. For example running thousands of wildcard queries per
day so the server gets too bogged down or crashes. We are upgrading
our
servers and SDSL lines to better cope with this problem.

The security code is a simple measure to prevent automatic ripper
software. It is however quite easy to bypass. We also use log file
analysis tools that check for excessive downloads each hour of the
day.
We frequently block IPs and Networks that are abusing our free
service.
I know it's a nuisance but it's necessary. If you have any comments

It saddens me to see how abusers do so much damage to other websites and
databases. We have had some similar at the college district where I
work. Seems like the idiots have nothing better to do than try to crash
servers.
