Hi, all
I am selling PCs and always I have to discuss wit customers their software
needs. Basically, they ask me to put software on their machines to do
particular tasks and I have to explain to them why software costs more than
PC itself.
So, I want to create a "cheap software" machine. Easiest way would be to run
Linux, but people want Windows. So, they have to buy copy of Windows. No
way around this one.
Here is a list of software that most people want and free/cheap equivalents
I have found. Please add to the list and give me your thoughts on my
selections.
Antivirus. I recomemnd VET. It is reasonably priced. There is a free
antivirus AVG, but found it not very good. (www.avg.com)
Anti Spy stuff. AdAware and Spybot S&D are well known free programs.
Office. Open Office package is free (www.openoffice.org). It is a
replacement for Word, Excel and Power Point. Will read Microsoft files.
Unfortunately, there is no alternative for Access or Outlook.
Outlook. ???? Any free/cheap alternatives?
CD/DVD-Burning (NERO replacement). CDBurnerXP Pro is a good choice
(http://www.cdburnerxp.se/download.php). It has some limitations, though. In
particular, it can not do 1:1 disk copy. On the other hand, most CD and DVD
writers those day come with NERO Express.
Are there good aplications for DVD video?
Pictures and Photos. I have found PICASA (www.picasa.com) to be of excellent
quality. It is free and has tons of features.
Video Editing. Virtual Dub is a very good program
PDF. Acrobat reader is free. There is alos free PDF authoring software at
www.pdf995.com
Is there other free/cheap software that people are using?
I reckon, most home users can have they PC all legal and spend only couple
of hundred dollars on software running Windows.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
Rudolf
