Try a new, fresh battery...

Most obvious cause?

Not sure if this is you're problem but.. I have 2 87's and a 78. The
displays on all of them have gotten flakey over the years. I carefully take
it apart and remove the screws holding the LCD display to the main board.
Clean the contact bar and re-assemble. Works everytime for me.

Silly question: Did you put in a fresh battery?

I tried that and even a bench supply, and just sitting there in the AC
current position it will start up for a second then fade again at
odd intervals.

Most obvious cause?
