fixed speed camera warning system

Hi all,

Have a look at this from Dick Smiths:

http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/41c7f1db0a943b4a2741c0a87f9c076
0/Product/View/D2749

It tells you when you are approaching a fixed speed camera.

Does anyone here have one? Can you update the speed camera locations
somehow?

And a more general question - Does anyone know where I can find a database
of GPS coordinates where fixed speed cameras are in Victoria?

Cheers, -H.

Just had one for a review

Can you update the speed camera locations
yes manually, or by web download from Uniden

It's a similar product to the Road Angel which has been around for a while
but it's lots cheaper.

Try here for downloads in OziExplorer format:
http://members.optusnet.com.au/~speed_cameras/speed_cameras.html

These gadgets seem to be flavour of the month. Various models are
available now all over the place.

Thanks Dave,

Actually, I found that site as I was googling just a second ago. While I
don't have ozi explorer, a neat trick is to re name the wpt file to txt
file and extrapolate the coordinates from that.

The file looks slightly small tho. Only 96 cameras in Vic?

Cheers, H

Ozi is available in a trial version. There are also lots of other
waypoint programs which will load Ozi files. You'll need a waypoint
manager program to automatically download the waypoints into your GPS,
so just make sure it supports Ozi format files.

As mentioned on the site, gpsbabel will convert to just about anything you
want. G7To will convert to a variety of formats, and will upload to Garmin GPS
receivers as well.

I've supplied it in Ozi waypoint format, mainly because I'm biased, but also
because it's a pretty easy to understand comma delimited format, which can be
adapted to other formats with a bit of manipulation.

I have to rely on reports I get from other users. However, I'm pretty strict
on what I get and put in, so that I don't get invalid entries appearing. In
fact, the 'maintenance' version of the waypoint files will tell you if the
camera location needs verification.

There are a number of different suppliers of speed camera locations in
australia, the ones with the most numbers appear to be the most lacking in
quality and useability.

That's the whole reason I started this in the first place. I wasn't happy
with the flexibility, comprehensiveness or accuracy of existing lists.
It's the most complete, up-to-date and *free* list available.

However, if you know of cameras that aren't on the list, feel free to email
me, I need the datum, lat/long or UTM co-ordinates of the camera, or, the two
cross streets and suburb (I have maps of most areas around the country), speed
at that location, and direction of cameras.
