In Fig. 1 the "dashpot" is in series with the spring. An ME, or for
that matter, a street mohead would never make that mistake. In fact
very few EEs would make that mistake either unless they were half way
thinking about the analogue, a resistor in series with a capacitor, to
get the equations correct.

It's unlikely this was the cause of the catastrophic failure but, just
to be safe, if you are ever around a large firing rocket engine that
has been free body diagrammed like this . . .
