I was talking to my mate the other night and he was bemoaning the fact
that he couldn't get good or cheap relays for his which controller..

Has anyone done it with FETs .... ???

Hi,
Haven't used them for a winch, but high current units should work fine. Have
used FETs in H bridge motor controls with out any drama and being manually
controlled, you don't need any smart high side switch controllers etc.

Another option would be to use suitable solid state relays such as those by
Crydom. This would save you the need for a few resistors and diodes in a
control cct as the control cct is built in, all you would need would be a
double pole double throw centre off switch.

Some of the higher current Crydoms and similar are SCR not FET.

You'll probably want a TO277 pack or similar for 30-100A ratings, assuming
it's a reasonable sized winch.

The cost would work out pretty much the same with a FET or SSR being around
$100 a pop (100A rating) and you need 4.

Cheers
Greg
