A judge Friday gave a repeat child molester a maximum sentence of 30
years to life in prison, calling him a stone-cold pedophile unlikely
to stop his attacks on young boys.
I see it as my responsibility to do what I can to make sure this
doesnt happen again, 4th Judicial District Judge Barney Iuppa told
Anthony Thomas Ganter, 42, after hearing details of Ganters long
history of abusing children.
Ganter, a Colorado Springs tow-truck driver who served prison time after
assaulting two boys in the late 1990s, admitted in a March plea
agreement to assaults on two more one in 1997 and another in 2008.
According to Ganter, however, most of his crimes have never come to light.
During questioning that led to his October arrest, investigators said
Ganter told a detective he had gotten away with molesting at least 10
other boys all under a scheme in which he sought out single mothers,
gained their trust, and then abused their children while playing the
role of a male mentor and role model.
Ganter used video games, movies and other prizes to entice his victims,
who were 6 to 8 years old, prosecutors said.
They just had to keep his little secret, said prosecutor Sharon Flaherty.
Police said in court documents that Ganter couldnt provide enough
details to track down the other children. Many of the assaults occurred
years ago in Florida, and Ganter could only provide first names.
Ganter, who dwarfed his victims at 5 feet, 11 inches and 270 pounds,
apologized in court. Theres nothing I can say that will take away the
pain and the anger that Ive caused, he told the judge, noting that
hed had difficulty getting treatment.
Public defender Kelly Moss credited Ganters honesty with police and his
therapists for leading authorities to his victims.
Flaherty, however, said Ganter tried to conceal an incredible amount
of child pornography after learning that probation officers would be
making an unscheduled home visit at a police detectives request last
year. Unable to clean up himself, Ganter called his roommate and asked
him to stash his computer equipment in the back of a car, drive it to a
nearby Waffle House and wait until the authorities were done with their
search.
The roommate was good enough to put him on speaker phone so that the
police could hear, Flaherty said.
Child pornography charges were among the 21 counts dismissed as part of
Ganters plea. In Colorado, sex offenders receive an indeterminate
sentence, meaning Ganter may be held indefinitely, up to the rest of his
life, if prison officials decide he poses a threat to children.
