Hello All,
a few weeks ago I mentioned how I downloaded
a joke about Jack Schitt that someone mentioned
here and how the joke ended up on me because
I was inundated with pop up screens and tool bars
that I did not want and all sorts of other rubbish.

You guys suggested "spybot" which I have installed
and it got rid of hundreds of bits of crap that had
been installed in my computer. Well there is one
bit of crap that just wont go away. My usual
home page is http://www.tpg.com.au
but every day my home page becomes
http://fastsearch.cc
I do not want this fastsearch.cc and it just keeps
coming back after I make TPG my home page.

I use the spybot search and destroy regularly and it
finds half a dozen items, but can't seem to fix this
fastsearch.cc from hi-jacking my homepage.

I am not computer savvy and this bleeding thing
is becoming very annoying,
Any ideas what to do next?

On the assumption that maybe it's missing something, try Adaware as well.

Make sure you get the latest definitions.

Cheers.

Hello Ken,
I installed the ad-aware program got the updates and to my delight
it found 60 odd bits of rubbish that the spybot program missed.

But my delight was short lived.
That stinking, hi-jacking "fastsearch.cc" reappeared as my
home page, the next time I opened up internet explorer.
The ad-aware did not kill it.
I reckon this crap, is worse than spam in my e-mail inbox, I can
delete the spam but this fastsearch.cc is a pain.

Anyway Ken, thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

Is that actually a search page? Do your settings tell IE to search from the
address bar? I haven't looked at fastsearch but is it actually associated
with Yahoo??

Hello Bruce,
Last night I saw your suggestion above. I read the articles and ran
the cwshredder program. It found a dozen or so items to fix.
I thought thats it! Fixed. Wonderfull.
This morning when I opened up internet explorer up came this
bleeding fastsearch.cc as the homepage.
What a bummer!
Thanks for your help Bruce.

John,

Have you tried using hijackthis to examine what is going on in the registry?
There may still be a few entries that need to be manually deleted. Also make
sure you have the latest CWshredder (version 1.06). The link to both
programs is http://www.merijn.org/ You could also get some more ideas on
what to do at
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=1134&hl=fastsearch Failing
that I would suggest you post your log file at one of the forums already
linked to, or at http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ .....it may help others get
rid of this crap of their systems.

Regards,

Bruce

I also forgot to mention that a detailed explanation of the hijackthis log
file is at http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/htlogtutorial.html

Hello Bruce,
the newer version of CWShedder seems to have worked.
Finger trouble on my part in not using the newer version
sooner. When I asked for the update I made the mistake
of assuming the present version I had would be upgraded.
Later on, I found the newer version in C:\windows\temp

Anyway, when I ran the newer version of CWShredder
more rubbish was found and dealt with.

A day and a half has passed and that poxy
"fastsearch.cc" has not hijacked my homepage.
Touch wood, I think it is fixed.
Thanks for pointing out those articles Bruce.

I will run the spybot, ad-aware and CWShredder
programs on a regular basis. Thanks guys,
I really appreciated your help with that problem.

John Crighton
