Farnell now offer free delivery on all web orders, regardless of the value
or weight:
http://au.farnell.com/jsp/bespoke/bespoke3.jsp?ICID=i-d953-00001029&bespokepage=farnell/en_AU/support/freefreight.jsp

So presumably you can order a single 10 cent resistor and they will courier
to your door for free.

Also, they have a new "premium" pricing system coming online soon that will
match all Digikey qty prices on 400,000 line items. A few hiccups in the
system at present, but should be onlinse soon I'm told. You have to ask get
your account activiated to get this special pricing though.

**Nice. Up yours Electus. $17.33 for overnight freight! What a joke! Much as
I like supporting Australian companies, when they gouge customers like
Electus does, I'll go with the Poms.

Good to hear. Many items from Farnell are outrageously priced in the
first place, and they need to do something about it, especially going
into bad economic times where the penny-pinching will become more
commonplace in companies that plan to survive.

On the other side of it - Mouser have this "free freight" with items
that are "Australian priced". Note that the "Australian pricing" is
substantially loaded compared to the US pricing, making the "offer" -
(like most "offers") a joke.

If Farnell are going to be matching any similar "bodgy"pricing
structure like this, then the whole deal is likely a total waste of
time.

If not - then its great news.

The website does say "regardless of value or weight of order".

I figure they would have done their sums in that the $10 they are absorbing
on each order will be more than made up for in extra sales and people
"upsizing" their order (who has the will-power to just order just a single
low value part? :->).
The number of people ordering one dollar parts etc where the free postage
significantly impacts the sale profit is probably insignificantly small in
the scheme of things. Smart move on their part.

The free postage is only for orders that total over AU$200.
X-ON offer the same service when sourcing from Mouser.

Better to just order in $US I've found.

Farnell are claiming they will price match almost every Digikey item "after
conversion". So it remains to be seen whether the rate will be competitive
and update frequently enough with the exchange rate. Even if they are still
a bit more expensive, the local stock, quicker delivery, and free postage
could be a winner in many cases.

I received an email from Farnell regarding this, and have just
received one from RS too - a copy of their blurb is below. It seems
like they are "stepping up to the plate" also.

I find myself holding off ordering from Farnell (or any) if I just
want a few (non urgent) parts, simply because of the possibility of
multiple freight charges, as well as making sure there is nothing I
have overlooked. If I then have to put in an order elsewhere, and the
price is reasonable I will just add those parts to that order instead.
In this way, it is a great idea, and will win them more sales.

The other situation is if I have a small order and there isnt a huge
price difference, and RS or Farnell have ALL the parts I need (where
the other doesnt have all) I will give the supplier with ALL the
entire order. Also saves having to deal with receiving multiple
shipments, and having to make sure I (or someone) is around on that
day to sign for them, and not out on a job

This will win me, but I wouldn't waste my time putting in an order for
a single low cost item unless there was a very good reason to do so.

Blatantly abusing the system will end up just getting it pulled out
from under you
