Farnell/CPC (UK): Online ordering security?

As I was about to confirm my online order at the CPC /Farnell site via
http://cpc.farnell.com/
I noticed that there was no padlock symbol in the status bar. I phoned
them and they assured me that the ordering process was very secure and
that most sites now did not have that symbol. Am I just out of date and
worried unnecessarily?

I don't believe that this symbol is becoming obsolete. None of the sites
I use omits the symbol.

Did the address in the address bar start with "https://" (note the 's')?
If not, I would be highly skeptical. Otherwise, if the 's' was there, I
*might* consider using the site...

When I went to checkout the site switched to HTTPS: and the padlock
was there. Also the lock and HTTPS: were in green.
This indicates a secure site.
