Fan problem in car

Does the fan in a car use a relay?
I have a Mitsubishi Sigma and most of the time the fan doesn't turn on
when I slide the switch and occasionally it will work. I have checked
fuses etc. Not sure if there is a relay problem or something else.
It is getting hot here in Melbourne and need the air conditioning! :)

Thanks,
Matt...................

Forgot to add that the airconditioning part uses a relay to switch the
seperate fan on in front of the radiator.

Matt.

**Spend 30 Bucks and buy a manual. A schematic will be included.

BTW: Without including FAR more specific information (such as year model,
etc) no one can help you.

sounds like a faulty switch, pull it apart and give it a good cleanup

blue colour, standard rims, very little rust, clean engine area, good

Anyway, I do have a Gregory's car manual made for my car and I think
it has the schematic, so I will see and look at it. Wish me the best
to understand it.

Thanks for suggesting the manual. Never thought of that.

I don't know what the heck it would be. AFAIK, there isn't a relay to
control the blower, only for the air con. Maybe the switch has had it
but that seems fine. I might check some motor connections but that
will probably be a waste of time. Baffled.....................

Btw, no way I am calling an auto elec. Man they'd charge me 200 bucks
just to park it at the joint.

**It seems you need another manual. I have a third party manual, for my
Commodore and the schematic section is complete, concise and easy to read.

Matt,

Had a similar problem in our UD truck the other day with the fan for the
aircon. It turned out to be the fan motor itself was getting dodgey.
Sometimes the unit would start when the switch was turned on, but other
times it wouldnt do anything. Turns out the fan would fire up if you could
turn it a little. I would assume this is something like contactors in the
fan that were getting tired. A bit hard to spin the fan every time it
wouldnt go, as they are well encased in the ventilation ducting...Anyway,
the fan replaced with a new unit, and it works every time the switch is
turned on!

Just a thought; try pulling out the fan and seeing if it will start every
time you apply power to it. If not, try turning it a little to see if it
will then go. Thats how i worked out it was the fan for ours.

Just a thought...

Cheers,

Same happened with my Magna - pull the f'in dash out? Na, just fiddle with
it and with luck it will arc enought to set the bugger on fire

Must be catching

I have a problem with the fan in my Toyota - bloody mice get in - die when
I hit the fan on for air conditioning - and stink like hell for the next
week or so - but thats not the worst - their body unbalances the fan and
vibrates like hell. Mongrel job to pul the sucker out (I suspect as I've
been too bloody lazy to do it)

This is very true of older cars. The motor commutator or brushes wear out
and the fan won't start in all positions. Later, it stops altogether.

The wiring is not rocket science. Turn on the fan (ignition may need to be
on or even engine ?) and see if you have 12V at the fan wires. If you don't
have 12V, you may not want to check all that elderly wiring - just cut the
wires and connect your own switch to provide power / earth.

The Sigma is the right age for wiring troubles. Oxidation causes the
connector wire crimps to lose contact. The spade connectors get weak and
oxidised. Wires even corrode inside the jacket. In particular, I like to
wire the ignition separately with my own wire. Another trick is to
disassemble every connector in the car, file the wire ends in the crimped
connectors then solder. Makes lights brighter, starting easier, wipers
faster !

Sounds like the fan motor is faulty.See if you can get hold of another one
for testing.

I suppose you've already hit the sucker with a can of CRC?

near the fan is a bank of 3 ( from memory) resistors that controll the
speed of the fan...
a m8 had one of the sigmas... lol shit box..
his failed and would only work on high.. maybee start there
cheers

Ok thanks. I love my Sigma!

my m8s sig was lowered with a stage 3 cam and extractors... got us into the
corner country no probs at all....
