Fake Green Lamp ???

** Hi to all my fans ...

Inspired by the recent ramblings here about the Philips brand " Eco Classic
30 / Energy Saving " halogen incandescent lamps in BC style bulbs - I
paid a visit to my local Woollies supermarket.

There, I found a selection of these technological " GREEN " wonders -
ranging from 28 watts to 70 watts power rating - all with the same claim of
"30% " higher energy efficiency.

Regular BC and ES 240 volt lamps have been withdrawn from sale by Woollies
since February this year - most other stores have few or none to sell you
anyhow, by now.

The only alternatives for general service are the EVIL compact fluorescent
types - ie FRAGILE, slow starting, short lived, incendiary, mercury
polluting, NON DIMMABLE, circuit breaker tripping fucking abortions !!

Curiosity got the better of me - so I purchased one only, 70 watt rated,
pearl coated example for $3.59.

The lamp packaging indicates equivalence to a 100 watt standard bulb and has
reference to a 2 year life.

Other wording states it is made in Poland.

( No concentration camp jokes - pleeease !! )

I did just 2 simple tests:

1. The current consumption at 240 volt AC was 317 mA = 76 watts.

2. Light output was compared with a standard 100 watt peal bulb - the
Philips Energy Saver showed 18% less on a DSE lux meter about 2.5 metres
away on a bench - ie 81 lux versus 96 lux.

With the wattage figure being 8.6% high and the light level being 18% low -
that makes the Philips lamp 29% less efficient than claimed.

I figure it would just edge out a standard ( now non obtainable) 75 watt BC
lamp - by maybe a few percent.

Ain't the new GREEN technology bloody marvellous folks .......

For comparison, how does it compare to a 75 Watt conventional
incandescent?.

I'm not really surprised by this, in fact I would probably be more
surprised if the product was genuine.

This particular scam seems to me to be simply an excellent way to up
the retail price of a household "light globe" from about 60c to $3.59,
(600% increase) and make people feel happy with it, and even be
conned into thinking that they are "saving" in the process.

What people don't seem to understand is that it is not only a 600%
increase when you take into account also the tax you had to pay on
that money when you earned it. (anything from 17% to 40% IIRC)

Like many "green" things, another great marketing scam, to sell poorly
performing, poor quality products for higher prices to the public.

What also pisses me off is this "lifespan" bullshit.

There are standard "non-PC" bulbs that have been in regular use in
mine and my parents houses, many have been there in excess of 10-15
years without failing. (Mains voltage is 234v) Maybe I'm lucky or
something, but I have found standard light bulbs to have an excellent
lifespan.

I think I need to buy some more "real" bulbs for places where CFL's
just dont cut it.

You just saved me doing a similar test.....

Your results are about what I would have expected and your conclusion is also
accurate.

Have you made your findings known to the relevant regulatory authority?
I imagine they'd take an, um, dim, view of false "Green" representations.
