Extended Warranty's

Hello,
I know there are a lot of service tech people on this board-- so I
figured I would ask this question here.

Any time I buy electronics, I always decline the extended warranty coverage,
if offered. It is pretty expensive.

Recently, my Hitachi 51 inch HDTV broke-- just barely inside the 1-year
warranty. It is not too late to buy Extended coverage for my TV. But it is
$550 for 5 years. Do you think it is worth it for a big screen TV? Do you
guys think Extended Warranty's are worth it in general?

Thanks for your opinions.

I think I'd bite the bullet and buy the insurance, if it's from a big
reputable retailer like Best Buy, etc.
You don't even want to think about how expensive an out-of-warranty repair
could be on an HD set.

I have seen many people cry when their set goes defective after the base
warranty, and they didn't have the extended one. If a tube goes defective,
or there is an involved fault condition, the repair will cost more than the
warranty!

I don't sell TV's or warranties, and I would suggest to have one.

naw, its cheaper to get longer guarantees from your credit card
company if they offer them, mine (visa) does, double guarantee is free
& additional years are cheap

Yeah, hadn't thought of that, but getting servicers to honor it might be a
problem. Often the customer will have to pay, then try to get the credit
card company to reimburse.
