Estimating ASIC switching factor for power calcs

Guest
Hi all,

Are there any tools that can give a switching factor estimation, based
on analysis of a gate level VCD dump of a worst case data pattern? I
have an ASIC I am working on, and we need to get the switching factor
as close as possible, as the power is near the limit.

Thanks,

Todd

Most synthesis tools have the ability to read in the VCD to annotate a
gate-level netlist and give you a power number. If you want to do it
from RTL Sequence Design's Powertheater works well.

Hi,

Okay, thanks. I'll talk to my synthesis guy, and if he can't help, I'll
look for that RTL tool.

Thanks!

Todd

We use Synopsys (for synthesis) that reads SAIF generated in NC
(Cadence).

Hi Todd,
AstroRail or primepower from synopsys.

Usually people want average power rather than peak power. Power
compiler from Synopsys works just fine. Primepower is good when you
want to see real peaks.
